Cleaning pour spouts might not be super exciting, but it’s necessary to know how to properly clean your pour spouts in order to make sure they continue to pour as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Here are some of our tips for what to do and what not to do when it comes to properly cleaning your pour spouts.
What to do when cleaning pour spouts
- Use soapy water. Soaking pour spouts in warm and soapy water is an excellent way to ensure that they get as clean and disinfected as possible. Soak your pour spouts in warm and soapy water for at least 10 to 15 minutes, but you can soak them overnight, as long as they are made of plastic. If your pour spouts are metal, you need to dry them as quickly as possible to protect them against rust.
- Rinse the pour spouts. Once you’ve soaked your pour spouts for at least 10 to 15 minutes in warm and soapy water, you can move on to rinsing them in cold water. Make sure you don’t skip this step. If you do skip the step, you could end up with soap in your patrons’ cocktails and no one wants that!
- Clean at least every two weeks. Once you’ve cleaned your pour spouts, it’s super important to keep cleaning them regularly and stay on top of your cleaning schedule. Clean the pour spouts at least once every two weeks but ideally even more regularly than that. You can also constantly rotate through your pour spouts to make sure that they are all pouring accurately and staying as clean as possible. You should also make sure to check on your more sugary liquors, since these pour spouts can get clogged with sugar particles more easily.
What not to do when cleaning pour spouts
- Don’t just use soda water to clean your spouts. Many people tend to clean their pour spouts by soaking them in soda water. While soaking your pour spouts in soda water can help clean them, make sure not to only use soda water. While soda water can help rid your pour spouts of some of their stickiness, the soda water does not have any antibacterial properties, so it won’t clean any harmful bacteria off of your pour spouts. You can use soda water AND soak your spouts in soapy water for best results.
- Don’t use abrasive detergents. Make sure to avoid using bleach or other abrasive cleaners, as these detergents can cause damage to the pour spouts and shorten their longevity.
- Don’t use scalding hot water on metal spouts. If you have metal pour spouts, make sure to avoid using super hot, scalding water on them, as this can cause rusting.
