Using the right type of pour spout is crucial for controlling pour speed, accuracy, consistency and cleanliness in your bar. That’s why we’ve created this guide, outlining what a pour spout is, why we use alcohol pour spouts, what to look for in a pour spout and some of the best types of pour spouts.
What is a pour spout?
You might be wondering, what is a pour spout exactly? A pour spout is a controlled flow spout that fits in the top of a liquor bottle and enables the liquor to flow through it consistently for better, more accurate pours. This tool enables bartenders to pour liquor accurately into glasses and measuring spoons.
Why should you use pour spouts?
If you have ever tried to pour liquor directly from the bottle into a small target like a measuring spoon, you know that it is super easy to spill liquid over the side of the bottle. And when you don’t use a measuring tool, you don’t know how much you are pouring, which can waste liquor and money. And spilling liquor is wasteful as well. So pour spouts help you control the amount you are pouring, as well as the consistency, accuracy and speed, and prevent unnecessary spillage.
What should I look for in a pour spout?
Pour spouts are available in a number of different sizes, flow rates, materials and finishes. You can get some pour spouts that stop the flow of liquor after a certain amount to control portions, while other pour spouts double as a measuring device. Depending on your style of bartending, different types of pour spouts will work best for you. However, there are a few things we recommend looking for in pour spouts. Avoid measured spouts that cut off after a certain amount of liquid, since these are often unreliable, especially with liquors that are extra sugary or syrupy. Instead, look for pourers with polycorks, which are finned rubber inserts around the neck of the pourer that can seal against the inside of the bottle’s neck.
Popular pour spout designs
There are a few different popular pour spout designs, including:
- One piece plastic spouts. These are the lowest price spouts on the market and come in a variety of colors. They are great for high volume bars where you are moving fast.
- Measured cut off spouts. These spouts are great for bars that serve very simple drinks and want to better control their stock, but they don’t work well for cocktail service.
- Cap on pour spouts. These pour spouts enable you to replace the lids on the bottle without removing the pourer. They are also very budget friendly and perfect for low volume bottles like single malts.
